Long ago, before the days of radio and television, after the daily chores were finished, folks would entertain themselves with music. On front porches from the Appalachians to the Ozarks, tunes echoed through hollows and over hills. This is the sound that HARDTACK strives for.
HARDTACK was born in 1997. Les Crider and Duane Porterfield discovered that there was indeed an audience that craves the natural, acoustic, old-time sound. Dennis Porterfield, Duane’s older brother, joined the group later. They have continued performing at fairs, festivals and historic events throughout the Kansas / Missouri area.
Preserving the sound that the instrument was meant to produce is a high priority. Amplification and electronics, when necessary, are only loud enough to be heard and blended well and is never used to alter or distort the natural voice of the instrument, created through aged woods, careful craftsmanship and simple pride.
"HARDTACK seems to be more of an historic reenactment group than just a band, recreating the music of our past so that it may be remembered in our future."
